PRK and Trans-PRK LASIK Procedure

In the PRK procedure, first the first layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is diluted with alcohol and mechanically removed, and the excimer laser is irradiated to the corneal stroma bed to correct the eye score.

In the Trans-PRK procedure, the epithelium is also removed with the help of a laser beam, which makes the procedure more precise. In fact, the Trans-PRK procedure is also called the No-Touch procedure. Because the surgeon does not touch the patient’s eye.

Advantages and disadvantages of PRK or LASEK surgery

Approximately 40 percent of patients use this procedure; especially people with thin corneas, martial artists, and those with myopia and astigmatism.

The possibility of discomfort (perceptible pain) and persistent for 3 to 5 days is observed in a group of patients.

Complete vision improvement takes several months after surgery.

The risk of infection is low and, if it occurs, usually appears in the first 3 to 4 days after surgery.

In PRK surgery, there is no possibility of displacement of the flap (thin layer of the cornea).

The time to return to daily activities after PRK surgery for visually sensitive jobs such as surgeons, bank employees, accountants, etc. is about 3 to 5 days, and the recovery period (rest time after surgery) is one week.
