This lesion is caused by a benign growth of connective tissue and blood vessels in the conjunctiva.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the early stages, the pterygium appears as a white area and gradually progresses towards the center of the cornea. Due to the presence of many blood vessels, its color is usually pink or red.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms of pterygium<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Burning and itching<\/li>\r\n<li>Red and watery eyes<\/li>\r\n<li>Reduced vision in advanced cases<\/li>\r\n<li>Causes astigmatism even in small pterygiums\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>In some cases, the pterygium becomes so large that it advances to the middle of the cornea and blocks vision.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Factors contributing to the development of pterygium<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ultraviolet (UV) radiation:<\/strong> prolonged exposure to the sun<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Strong wind and dust:<\/strong> chronic eye irritation<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Prevention:<\/strong> Wearing sunglasses and a brimmed hat is recommended for people who work or live in bright and dusty environments.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Treatment of pterygium<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The main treatment for pterygium is surgery. However, in some cases, there is a possibility of its recurrence.<\/p>\r\n<p>If only the lesion is removed during surgery and the surface underneath it is left uncovered, there is a possibility of recurrence in about 80% of cases. However, in new methods, the surface underneath the lesion is covered with connective tissue (graft) to reduce the possibility of recurrence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pterygium surgery methods:<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Conjunctival autograft surgery (CAG)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>In this method, a part of the patient&#8217;s own conjunctiva is separated from a healthy area and placed at the site of the lesion.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>2. Amniotic membrane surgery (AMT)<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>This procedure uses amniotic membrane (the placenta of a newborn baby) that the doctor obtains from a tissue bank.
